Two of
Britain's greatest painters, John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough, were
born within ten miles of eachother on the river Stour, but 50 years apart.
Both were landscape painters deeply inspired by their native Suffolk countryside.
And although they never met, their lives would be inexorably linked through
the influence of local Ipswich artist, George Frost.
John Constable was born in 1776 at East Bergholt, Suffolk, the son of a prosperous
corn merchant. His family disapproved of his career choice as a painter and
in 1793 he entered the family business. Despite their disapproval, however,
Constable’s position in society meant he could roam the countryside
without fear of trespass, and this he did during his spare time, producing
numerous drawings, oil sketches, and paintings.
This was the beginning of a lifelong study of the landscape around East Bergholt,
Flatford and Dedham which was to provide much of his subject matter throughout
his career.
Ipswich, eight miles away from East Bergholt, was a lively town during this
period. Constable would have mixed in social society, and it was during these
visits...
