Anne Lynch
Stories and myths interest Anne Lynch, such as the stories about spirits being held within vessels. Issues around caring and nurturing, laced through these stories, also arouse her curiosity regarding everyday objects and their prominence within our lives.
Artist's statement
The Scottish landscape introduced me to painting and when I moved to London I missed the easy access to that source and grew more reliant on internal journeys. Stories and myths interest me, such as the spirit being held within vessels. Issues around caring and nurturing, laced through these stories, arouse my curiosity regarding everyday objects and their prominence within our lives.
The Cycladic figures in the British Museum engendered in me a fascination with hands. Hands can represent caring, protecting, nurturing and fate and I use them symbolically in my work. Other influences from travel creep into the paintings. I also use parts of objects or faces so that the story within the painting is not necessarily complete but the viewer can bring their own response to it. Woodlands represent a place to hide or be protected by, which links in with my themes.
I enjoy juxtaposing my figures with landscapes in the attempt to lure a conversation between them that is more like free thought or association. I use various media including watercolour for its depth and delicacy of mark, which are very important to me. Sometimes I need a large scale to allow my ideas to mature.
