Brian Whelan

The Times calls him “a theologically provocative maverick artist.”

Artist's statement

This will be my busiest and most exciting year to date. I’m participating in 11 exhibitions: eight in the UK, one in Spain and two in China; and co-curating two shows.

These paintings were shown recently in Beijing for an exhibition entitled 'Our Lives Our Books'. Religious themes are also my choice for my return to the Salthouse Church this summer (an honour to be asked back and a lot of fun), where I will be presenting a large Last Supper.

Urban landscapes and modern myths of the immigrant will be the themes for ‘Celtic Fringe', the second stop in an international touring exhibition I’m co-curating with Gallegan artists (including Alfonso Costa Beiro) in the medieval city of Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain.

However, most of my time this summer will be spent working in my studio and if the weather allows, in its garden on the Norfolk-Suffolk border.
