An exciting and demanding summer is in full swing with the Exhibition at The Upstairs Gallery, Beccles up & running, a successful weekend at the Abbots Ripton Garden Show and fun & laughter exhibiting alongside 25 other artists and a myriad of musicians and comedians at the LockStock Festival  in Camden.

Its been a busy old time. I am currently working on a few new pieces ready for showing at Nomad in Bourn for a 3 month run http://www.bourngolfandleisure.co.uk/nomad_gallery.html

In August, i am destined for Bath to support The Bath Prize Gallery where hopefully you shall see me experience something new. Rather than be holed up in my studio as I so frequently am, I am endeavoring to take to the streets, painting in situ. As a contemporary abstract artist, generally working in 3D and acrylics, this is going to be somewhat of a challenge, but one I hope to rise to. Finding inspiration in not just my surroundings, but also the methods of capturing those ideas and the physical ways in which paint meets the canvas, brushes I thought I knew can still find different ways of opening new avenues for my creativity!

This edition's painting is 'East Coast' currently on display at The Upstairs Gallery in Beccle

Spring has brought with it a flurry of activity in the studio as projects and exhibitions demand paint meet canvas!

A change of season always brings with it a change in feeling and ideas, with Spring in particular giving me the inspirational kick I need at this time of the year. Studying landscapes as I do, there are the more obvious expolsions of colour through the countrside to fire the imagination, but the real buzz for me is the change of light. The bolder strokes of brilliance from a more dominant sun pull out a stronger, livelier palette.

My latest pieces follow the warmer tones of Cambridge's historical buildings to the miriad hues of pasture greens and dappled shadows throwing up new forms. Recently captivated by the enchanting view of the river, framed by a University window the pull of looking out upon the green pastures of Cambridgeshire meadows was instinctive and yet was intrinsincally drawn to follow the light cast within my immediate confinement. Spurred on by this burst of seasonal colour, I am working on pieces for Summer Exhibition at Abbotts Ripton Hall and the Lockstock Festival, Camden.

Encouraged by positive feedback, my work is now receiving a thorough going over by fans on my Facebook page. Do drop by, let me know what you think  http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/pages/Artworld3/318888302004

With three winter exhibitions and buoyed by a steady sale of work during the cold dark winter months I began the new year thinking about future works and running theme for my next project.

To follow on from my last piece Trinity College, Cambridge, I was inspired not just by the architecture, but the real nuts and bolts of the city. The bustle and industry of the market place, the lofty aspirations of the University, and the tranquillity and wildlife of the surrounding green spaces. I awe in the rawness of the surreal and the sublime to the arcadia and slumber of the meadows.

Thus an exploratory trip to Oxford seemed only befitting and the views beyond the dizzy heights of St.Mary's Church Tower took my breath away, quite literally.  As I wound my way to the top tower and gazed out over the hills surrounding the City, I remember thinking how very concentrated the whole University Campus seemed, at least, the historical monuments to learning. It appeared to me like a self-indulgent complex of man's very noble efforts in the realms of understanding the world. Bold and powerful but, amongst the distant green slopes of the Cotswolds and Chilterns, somehow fragile and inconsequential.

Overall Oxford is one of a contrast between the old and new. The frozen gaze of the gargoyles on the church that have looked out over a city so important in our advances in science and our modern way of life. Those yellow stones would tell such a story given the life.

Although real beauty should never be expected to compete, and maybe its bias, but Cambridge has secrets, the cobbled back streets whisper as I walk, it cannot fail to inspire and this fills me with such a sense of excitement and wonder, of the diversity within, just waiting to be found.

My journey back into the art field has seen me start the process of landscapes, with local areas of Ely and Wells. This soon took me further afield in Britain and abroad and I was naturally compelled towards seascapes. Automatically being drawn to the animation of the coast, looking at the movement and feel for the ocean and surrounding terrain.

As a stark extreme this led me on to explore more urban themes and cityscapes. Naturally, living and working in Cambridge meant I could explore such a rich history, producing what I feel to be very symbiotic, diagrammatic paintings. On achieving a 'Scapes' exhibition, I have just been made Artist of the Month by French Gallery Pickin Art, www.pickinart.com

Art is always a challenge. Are the creative juices flowing? Is it acceptable to others? Does it need to be? Is it financially viable? Following several productive years in the art field I detoured and took the opportunity to build up a Garden Design & Maintenance Company. This has been my dilemma, as my focus shifted, my art dwindled and so too did my passion. A year later the need to paint once again has taken over, like a physical requirement – the need to breathe. If I want to live, not just survive, I HAVE to paint, and this marks the start of my journey back into the art world. Will I paint? Will I exhibit again? Will I get noticed? We'll have to wait and see...
