Following flu and a lot of printmaking I have been left with a breathing problem. I think it is time to switch from oil based printing ink to the new water based inks, which I have been told are now very good. Have any other printmakers had problems from breathing in white spirit fumes from many years of cleaning of blocks and printing equipment? Anyway, as a consequence I have not done much new work since Christmas, other than prepare for the three shows which start in May at the Buckenham Gallery in Southwold followed by my first one man show in America and a mixed show at Messum's in October.
Catherine (my wife) & friends had a great Christmas pottery show in Wivenhoe. She and her collegues work under the guidence of the wonderful potter Sarah Paynter. Catherine seems to have cornered the market in boat-shaped bowls!

Just collected unsold work back from the Bircham Gallery show with
Fred Robinson. Fred runs the best art delivery and collection service in
the area (Walrus Art Moves). I sometimes tag along with him, if there is
a boatyard I want to visit on route and also it is an oppertunity to get
out of the studio and catch up on what's going on in the local art world.
This trip we visited the Wherry Yacht yard in Wroxham .
The Trust has three fascinating Yacht Wherrys. The clinker built "Hathor"
with it egyptian theme is of particular interest to me, she is due a big
rebuild, so just right for me to study her construction, but first they
have to raise money to rebuild the slipway! Hopfully if I can do some paintings
or prints of the yard and the boats I can help raise some money and awareness
of the value of saving these unique vessels.
Studio work wise I have just finished the second two colour print of an
American Boatyard "Brooklin Boat Yard , past & present" and
a painting of one of Guy (Taplin's) swans. ready of Messum's mixed christmas
show. I now have 40 canvas' prepared which are intimidating me so I must
begun painting in ernest for the next big one man show in 12 months time!

I have just received the first copies of our new book "River Colne
Shipbuilders, A portrait of Shipbuilding 1786 to 1988” which was designed
by my wife Catherine and co-authored by me and John Collins, the archivist
for Wivenhoe's rather excellent Nottage Maritime Institute.
The Nottage serves partly as a museum to the past but especially as a place
to learn traditional boat-building and maritime skills, which as everyone
knows is my passion.
As it is summer holidays I have been able to spend some time with my children
and have been amazed how quickly they have picked up traditional letter
press skills on a 100 year old Jardine treadle machine. Now they aim to
corner the business card market of Wivenhoe!.
When I am not playing with my kids I am busily preparing for my exhibition
at the Bircham Gallery in Holt ( Sept 12 to Oct 7) where I hope to exhibit
a new triptych along similar lines to the one I did for Salthouse last year.
Also I have to plan a trip to Maine USA, which has a beautiful coast line,
a fine tradition in boat building, summers of sunshine, lush forests rolling
down to the shore with some excellent galleries selling my work. For which
I am also working on a set of two colour linocuts of Maine boatyards
