In my last plog I implied that I would work this year without any more shows, but I could not resist the offer to exhibit at the old chapel in Wymondham, Norfolk. The chapel was originally built in the 12th century as a chantry and dedicated to St Thomas Becket.
It is now the local art centre and in the process of being renovated. It looks great, with atmosphere and natural light, the expected renovations will add to Its suitability as a hanging space.
I may include a Crucifiction Painting and one of the Pop Art pictures I do with David Koppel.

Among
my exhibits at the Mandell and the Stew gallery, I was both surprised and
pleased to find that the painting I named ‘ Show Me The Way’
which was finished in 1988, stood up well amongst my newer works. In fact
it was one of the paintings that pleased me the most. It was painted in
oil on velvet and seeing it in the marvelous space of the Stew gave me an
idea for future pursuits. I included it in the show only because I had so
much room that I thought it would not hurt to see how it would compare with
my newer work. This demonstrates the importance of being able to see ones
paintings together in a large space.
I would like to give my thanks to the artists who created the Stew gallery
and for their cooperation but hope they do not go through with their plan
to cut the gallery into smaller areas. I would also like to thank Jamie
and Ethna for their help, and of course John Allen who made both galleries
possible for me to exhibit in. This will probably be my last one man show
for some time.

I am in the midst of working on a painting I used to call ‘The Crucifixion’
but which I have renamed ‘Christ and Antichrist’. The painting
was triggered by an image in a magazine of figures at the base of the cross.
I realize now that I am not sure if the crucified man in my painting is
in fact Jesus. His face is almost malevolent, he could easily be the Antichrist.
I find I am not able - or perhaps am unwilling? - to make any changes, so
have added another figure who could be the Christ. I’m not trying
to change history by suggesting that the Antichrist could be depicted as
a figure on the cross, but I do not want to lose the immediacy of the figure
by changing the face. Another thought is that the figure could be Barabbas,
who was freed instead of Jesus Christ by Pontius Pilate. Whatever I decide,
this painting should be going into the Mandell’s Gallery exhibition.
