Being outside revitalises my spirits and stimulates my desire to paint. I typically begin a painting on the river in my kayak or in my rowing boat, where ever I start it's as close to the water as I can get. The second stage of the painting happens away from the original location and takes on a life of its own, with no references to distract me my memories and imagination are given room to expand the subject of my painting into a place of mystery and drama. The ambiguity of my paintings time and location is a central part of the works character along with the quality of the surface and the gestural marks incised into the paint.

This painting, from a series called Off Road, was started by laying one canvas over another and through a small cut out in the top canvas I made rapid gestural marks until the lower canvas became a dense network of colour. From this I looked for landscape features and developed the painting to its conclusion. I like to invent different methods of painting for each new series of work. This helps me explore new territory and challenge my notions of landscape painting.
During April I will be showing at The Gallery at Bevere, Worcester from 4 to 25 April, and the Addenbrookes hospital, Cambridge, from 28 April to 23 June. In May I will be showing at Art@Sudborough from 29 to 31 May. My work is currently available from the Fairfax Gallery, Burnham Market and the Sarah Wiseman Gallery, Oxford.

This painting is part of a series based on an imaginary
trip downstream from the Cam to the Norfolk coast. Less imaginary but challenging
has been sketching from my drifting kayak, with it turning this way and
that it gives the sketches a more chaotic feel than sketches made on other
transport. I've had a busy couple of months with the Fairfax gallery taking
my work to the AFF, making arrangements for solo shows for next year and
of course painting. My work is now on sale at the Sarah Wiseman Gallery
in Oxford as part of their christmas exhibition and later in a solo show
at The White Horse Gallery in Whepstead from January to February.

This painting was started with spontaneous, intuitive marks and colours
using a variety of tools like sticks and blades - in the scratches and smudges
I saw features that I recognised as Walberswick - not long returned from
a trip to Norfolk and Suffolk it came as no surprise to see it emerging.
Other paintings inspired by the trip can be seen on my website.
Soon I will be launching myself on the Cam in a kayak with the object of capturing something of river life whilst I drift. I like sketching on the move - literally. I have sketched from a car, train, bus, campervan, ferry and whilst walking - moving adds texture and character to the line, working rapidly I capture the features of the landscape, rarely looking down, the uncensored line throwing up delightful shapes and observations, directly responding to the landscape with the emphasise on looking rather than composing.
