Afloat:
August, Hatfield Hines, Holt, Norfolk

Hatfield Hines Gallery
The simple topic of ‘afloat’ showcases the wide variety of styles amongst British artists at the Hatfield Hines Gallery in Holt, Norfolk. From the beautifully crafted, calm, misty views of The Thames in the 1970s by Gordon Hales (RSMA, Wapping Group) to the bright views of Fishermen carrying out their work in Sheringham by the Kokoschka-trained colourist Derek Inwood and then the almost
frenzied movement of sails by Jonathan Alan Reynolds, this varied exhibition will inspire many to spend their summers in that typical British pastime…just messing about on the river.

Roger Ackling and Jenny Creasy
The Cut, halesworth, Suffolk
17 August - 18 September

Jenny CReasy, The Cut
There is little obvious connection between the work of Roger Ackling and Jenny Creasy, although both artists have one thing in common: they experienced Roy Ascott’s influential ‘Groundcourse’ at Ealing Art College in the sixties.

Jenny Creasy was introduced to the work of St. Ives-based painters such as Roger Hilton, Patrick Heron and Peter Lanyon through her first marriage to the sculptor Brian Wall, who was an early assistant to Barbara Hepworth, and her paintings show this initial influence.

Later this summer she is showing new paintings in the Concourse Gallery at The Cut in Halesworth, while Roger Ackling will be exhibiting in the Malt Room.

For Jenny Creasy, the process starts with a ‘mental map’ which proceeds to an outline sketch away from the canvas; however, once the first mark is made on the canvas all bets are off, as instinct takes over, because from here the initial ‘map’ will have no say in the outcome. The usual format is 180 x 180cm, but at the other end of the scale are panels of 30 x 30cm, where the challenge is in retaining the same sense of scale and power as the larger work.

Jenny has lived and worked in Suffolk since 1982; she has shown widely in East Anglia and occasionally in London group shows.

Chelmsford Art Trail: 11 - 26 September, Chelmsford, Essex Chelmsford Art Trail
The 2010 Chelmsford Arts Trail will be hitting the Essex town’s streets again in September. Over 50 artists will showcase their work in a wide range of venues throughout the town centre, including in a collective exhibition within contemporary gallery The West End Art Gallery (within Interior Angle).
Following the success of the anonymous art postcard sale in 2009, the town will hold another sale, enabling visitors to purchase a mini original piece of art.

The Trail is free and an opportunity to view a mix of contemporary art, including installation and textiles,
sculpture, photography, painting, prints, illustration and ceramics.

Celebrations By the Beach:
Ferini Art Gallery, Pakefield, Lowestoft, Suffolk

Ferini Art Gallery
This August Ferini Art Gallery in Pakefield, Suffolk, marks its 10th anniversary. Since it started trading in August 2000, it has exhibited many hundreds of artists’ creations, says the gallery’s Michaela Barber. ‘These have been in many forms, across all dimensions and media, all delightfully original with the
artists’ imagination and attention to detail stretched to the limit.

‘We believe that the most successful artists spend their time productively developing their vision, interpretation and skills. Sometimes artists ask, “What sells well, because I can paint in all sorts of ways”. This is definitely not what the Ferini Art Gallery is looking for.’

Ferini has four distinctive gallery areas and the gallery is close to the sea, with its traditional fishing boats and cliff top walks.

Grapevine: Phoenix From The Flames

Fiona French at The Grapevine Gallery
Running any business is not without its surprises - some welcome, some less so. In early April, the team from Norwich’s Grapevine Gallery were visiting the Craft Trade Fair in Harrogate when, retiring for a relaxing evening with friends, it came as a very unwelcome shock to receive a phone call saying the gallery was on fire!

Two hundred miles and 4 hours’ driving away, any direct action was problematic. Suffice to say that after many phone calls and fantastic assistance from friends, customers, staff and the emergency services, ‘Grapevine opened as usual at 10 the following morning. Just like The Mermaid - we never closed!’ says Peter Lowe. ‘We were, however, operating from a much reduced space. The question was - how to turn this problem into an opportunity?’

Three months on, that opportunity is now being realised, with the emergence of what Grapevine calls a ‘fantastic new minimalist gallery space’. Completion is scheduled for August, with a formal re-opening in early October and a major exhibition of new work by Fiona French (see image).
