A
chance to buy some of the best at Norwich Castle
The East Anglia Art Fund is collaborating with Norwich Castle in hosting an
exhibition of many of the region’s finest contemporary visual artists
this autumn and, what is more, all the works are for sale.
The Castle has gone to great lengths to make sure the selection of work is made
by fresh objective eyes, bringing in three members of the New English Art Club,
including one abstract painter and the previous chair of selection for NEAC,
Bill Boyer. For lovers of art, it means the chance to buy some of the very best
contemporary art available in and around Norfolk. Expect a blizzard of red dots
early on in proceedings.
The focus will be on the great strength of painting in the area today with the
exhibition being organized into four parts; a series of three solo exhibitions
(Norfolk Painters 2008) and one open exhibition, Norwich Castle Open Art Show.
Norfolk Painters 2008 presents successive solo selling exhibitions by three
of the most important artists living and working in Norfolk - Brüer Tidman,
John Kiki and Susan Gunn; whilst the Open Art Show will be an exhibition of
around 100 artists selected by the three members of NEAC.
The artists - Brüer Tidman, John Kiki and Susan Gunn - will each present
solo shows selected from their work to date. These will be shown in the museum’s
Norwich Union and Bernard Matthews Galleries.
Brüer Tidman’s paintings will be exhibited from 13 September to 12
October. His works are inspired by his life-long interest in the human figure
and are grounded in his excellence as a draughtsman. The Norwich show will provide
visitors with a significant opportunity to see Brüer’s work over
a number of decades in a focused and in-depth presentation.
The scale and confidence of John Kiki’s work will be on show from 18 October
– 16 November. Work from across his career will be shown alongside new
paintings that extend Kiki’s interest in sources as diverse as classical
myth and magazine photographs.
Susan Gunn, who received international recognition when she was awarded the
Sovereign European Painting Prize 2006, will be exhibiting from 22 November
– 4 January 2009. Her work is expected to create a contemplative atmosphere
in the heart of Norwich with a presentation of her beautiful, highly sought
after, abstract paintings that combine spiritual weight with surface incident.
The highly successful Open Art Show returns to the Timothy Gurney Gallery at
Norwich Castle from 18 October – 23 November. Entries are welcome from
all artists who live, work or are inspired by Norfolk, the selection is by open
submission, with no restriction as to subject matter. The closing date for artists
to enter the Norwich Castle Open Art Show is June 6, 2008. Telephone 01603 493625
