Douglas Farthing War art is important. I document the real life events of serving soldiers. Our profession is so different to any other and the position you find yourself in, at a moment’s notice, is unlike anything at home. To record these events, from a soldier’s perspective, is important. There is such a mix of emotions – from the heat and dust of an explosion and some sad memories, to the pride of being a part of The British Army - one of the truly great organisations.
I will be out on patrol, but I will also be soaking up the atmosphere and images. I quickly sketch a situation to paint later and have often found that my drawings allow barriers to be broken down with the indigenous population.
Kabul is so beautiful with the snow capped mountains and the medieval streets creeping up the hillsides. The light is clear and cool. I look forward to visiting in peaceful times.
My paintings capture not only the ‘real’ soldier on patrol but also the people of the Middle East and their landscapes. I have had two commissions to date with the military and am keen to obtain more. I want to serve my community both in art and as a part-time soldier and one day as a war artist. Artist’s Profile
