I am a professional artist, mainly deep sea marine, who grew
up in East Anglia. I had learned to sail at Aldeburgh under the great Jumbo
and I spent three years of my youth as a seaman on a British cargo ship
circumnavigating the oceans of the world, including two hurricanes off the
top of the Beaufort Scale. I then served four years in our ‘family’
Regiment, the 13th/18th Royal Hussars, at which point I went to America
and lived the rest of my life there. After eighteen years spent in public
relations in Manhattan, a sea change was needed, so I moved to the fishing
port of Camden, Maine. Here l taught myself to paint in oils through the
long and freezing winter. And eventually, after a year of indecipherable
daubs, I sold one!
Twenty years on I sell my work in six galleries in the US, including the
Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut where I am one of their
master marine artists.
We came back here as my son went to Iraq and Helmand, and since being here
I have established myself in one or two galleries and have done two solo
exhibitions for Help for Heroes, one of which was for General Sir Richard
Dannat at the National Army Museum in London.
I have my own studio and gallery at my home in Ferry Road which is open
most days. I also give one on one painting lessons from here.
My paintings attempt to show the many moods of the sea that I have seen
during my life. I do paint some local landscapes from time to time but my
love of painting is out there beyond the breakers.
