Painting is my way of thinking about places. Each work is a souvenir, usually of Kenya where I lived years ago and return to regularly.

There is the Africa of experience, of village life, of safaris through savannah, mangrove, rainforest and the Indian Ocean. Then there is the Africa of the mind, developed from an early age through toys, adventure stories, nature books, films and later through current affairs. I recognise and try to combine some of these aspects in my work.

I paint from observation of still-life stage sets. Playing with models and materials usually leads to further ideas that I probably would not arrive at just using a sketchbook.

I hope that my work reflects my belief that there is much joy, much promise and much to be grateful for ‘out of Africa’.
