As an experienced
gardener, I often found my interior design clients asking for garden planning
ideas. I had always painted as a hobby alongside my interior design career
and as the painting began to take over from designing, flowers seemed to
be the natural subjects. I particularly enjoy the strong colours and immediacy
of pastels to explore the various textures and light effects that these
subjects offer.
We visited the Garden Park in Sigurta, Italy, some years ago and were amazed
at this wonderful view. Visitor could walk on a narrow bridge across the
pond planted with Lotus. The magnificent blossoms were waist high. Over
the top you could see the rest of the garden and through the gap to the
very deep valley beyond with the hills in the distance.
Californian Poppies and Pansies is typical of my garden pictures –
pots of plants in the sun with a view of the garden in the background. These
are the subjects that my workshop students love to paint.
I enjoy painting little pictures like Pansies in an old jug on the spur
of the moment – just going into the garden, picking a few flowers,
popping them into a jug and standing them on a table in the sun.
