Nicola Slattery

Described as ‘haunting and surreal’, I hope my work is like reading a random page in a gripping novel, you want to know more but instead of turning pages, you turn over your imagination. A strong sense of narrative is my aim whilst never telling the whole story. Viewers share imagined moments portrayed in a picture but remain free to create their own beginning and ending according to what they see.

Ambiguity is deliberate. I am not always certain what is happening myself as I start with ideas which develop continuously as I work upon them. Chasing the Dove began with quite a literal idea simply involving a woman and a bird. As the painting neared completion, I thought about how we chase after many elusive things in our lives, even peace. Does the woman eventually catch the dove? Tipping the Balance shows justice in action but is it really fair?

I’ve exhibited throughout East Anglia and further afield with regular exhibitions in London, the Cotswolds, Scotland and Ireland. I look forward to exhibiting my work at the Cork Brick Gallery in Bungay throughout May.
