Julia Tooley

I paint primarily in gouache, a medium I absolutely love for its velvety, matte finish and bold opacity. It’s water-based, but full of surprises—sometimes exciting, sometimes a little terrifying—as I figure out how to bring an image to life. I’m drawn to everyday joys: food, flowers, city streets, and quiet views you might otherwise miss. I love picking out tiny details—the glistening flakes on a croissant or light catching on a ceramic jug—that make a moment feel special. Living in Norwich inspires me constantly. If my work can bring someone a smile, a moment of happiness, or a chance to pause and reflect on the beauty in everyday things, then I know I’ve done what I set out to do.
